I have spent most of my time researching what is required to improve the lives of the Maasai as the NGO’s first target area is Simanjiro a newly created district in the heart of Maasai country ( South of Arusha). I was due to go with the guys on Sunday 1st but I must go to Mombasa tomorrow to get a new Kenya visa at the border and make a payment in ksh to a friend in Nairobi. Am looking forward to the trip, which hopefully will also include stopping at Mshiu – near Shimoni – to see the completed girls’ school I was helping on at the start of the year. Forms 1 & 2 have finished their first term.
Thinking of the Maasai…was talking to Isaac the askari….nightwatchman. He was in a TV documentary a year or two ago which followed the transition of the young morans from warriors to adulthood. We got onto the subject of relationships and he said he had 3 wives…. Oh ,That was quick, considering he’s only about 21 yrs old. Apparently the oldest wife is 12 and still at school !! Anyway, she’s been promised to him and I guess the first down payment of cows had already happened; I must read up on the Maasai customs.
